Rik Versteeg

Rik Versteeg {1990, Drunen, North Brabant} grew up in a creative family of photographers and developed a passion for photography at an early age. During family holidays, he used his grandfather’s analogue camera and admired the slideshows of his grandparents’ travels. The images and stories sparked his imagination and offered an escape from a world in which he sometimes felt out of place.

In 2007, Rik began studying Audiovisual Production in ’s-Hertogenbosch, where he developed his knowledge of visual storytelling and the technical aspects of photography and film. After completing his studies, he moved to Rotterdam to attend the Willem de Kooning Academy. There, he found the freedom to explore his feelings of alienation from society and gradually came to understand his queer identity. Art became a way for him to explore this part of himself, and in 2013 he graduated with a series focused on conceptual fashion. Shortly afterwards, he established himself as an independent artist.

In 2019, Rik held his first solo exhibition, "The Masquerade Ball", at Qlick Gallery in Amsterdam, presenting a series of independent works. The exhibition was well received, and his work went on to feature at several art fairs across the Netherlands. In 2020, he presented "Sensitive Obscurities: Exploring the Queer (Sub)conscious", a solo exhibition that further established his presence as a queer artist in Rotterdam. In March 2024, he published his first photobook, "Mind Mirage: An Ode to the Queer Community", continuing to explore his identity as a queer person through collaborations and independent projects.

Rik continues to explore the possibilities of artistic expression, using his platform to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and environmental sustainability. Through his work, he hopes to inspire meaningful social change.

As a queer visual artist, I explore the possibilities of self-expression. Through my work, I seek to inspire social change by examining human rights, climate change, and our relationship with nature through a queer lens. My work creates a space for transformation, both personal and collective, through art that moves between reality and surrealism.

My development as an artist is closely intertwined with my identity as a queer person. Art became a refuge for me, a place where I found both comfort and strength. My practice encompasses photography, film, make-up, and costume design, through which I seek to redefine traditional artistic boundaries and create layered, immersive experiences.

Through an inquisitive and exploratory approach, I create images that challenge social norms and reflect our search for authenticity. “My work questions patriarchal structures and challenges heteronormative ways of thinking, while encouraging dialogue, understanding, and introspection.

My art is characterised by vivid, contrasting colours, complex concepts, and layered metaphors that speak to universal emotions. I invite viewers to connect with their own stories and reflect on their perspectives on identity and belonging. I see my work as a platform for exploring and ultimately embracing authenticity in all its forms, fostering equality and community while challenging stereotypes.
