Kim Engelen

Kim Engelen is a Dutch contemporary artist and international investor. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design and earned a master’s degree in Critical and Pedagogical Studies at Malmö Art Academy (Lund University). Engelen is continually inspired by the complexities of human relationships, and her work often finds its origins in interpersonal experiences. Her work explores how vulnerability and human connection can become sources of strength, opening pathways to transformation, empowerment, and healing.

Engelen has been a guest at TEDx China, and her work has been published in "Contemporary Art Review," "Art Uncovered," and "Shanghai Daily," among other publications. She is the author of more than 25 books, including "Confession Drawings Journal: A Guided Journey of Emotional Expression and Inner Clarity," in which she inspires readers to discover emotional expression and inner clarity through art.

Engelen is best known for her ongoing projects, such as "Confession Drawings" and "Sun-Penetrations," which focus on themes of loneliness, vulnerability, and catharsis. "Confession Drawings" consists of colorful, candid drawings, while the "Sun-Penetrations" series features dark iPhone photographs and short, meditative videos. Her art has been exhibited around the world and is held in private collections throughout Europe, the United States, and China.

Through her unique approach and ongoing engagement with social and relational themes, Engelen explores the boundaries of self-expression and social reflection. In doing so, she actively contributes to a broad cultural and spiritual dialogue.

My work explores the connections that bind us to ourselves, to one another, and to our shared humanity. Rooted in vulnerability, courage, connection, and authenticity, my practice examines the emotional dimensions of psychosocial challenges such as misunderstanding, rejection, and loneliness, alongside themes of hope, love, and inner growth.

Personal experiences and spiritual insights are central to my inspiration, with human relationships always at the forefront. I am influenced by the philosophies of Abraham Hicks and Louise L. Hay, as well as the powerful and intimate approaches of artists such as Marina Abramović and Tracey Emin.

I approach my art as an evolving, relational process. I often work in series or ongoing projects that develop organically. These take various forms, including video, performance, drawing, photography, and books. My "Confession Drawings" are colorful, raw, and honest, while my "Sun-Penetrations" are dark, meditative, and existential. Although no people are visible in the "Sun-Penetrations," the human experience remains central. My style is personal, intimate, and socially engaged, incorporating both minimalist and realistic elements.

Through my art, I aim to create a safe space where love, security, courage, and trust can be felt. It is a place for reflection, healing, and growth, where viewers and participants can feel empowered in their own process of personal transformation.
